Proverbs 3:5 is one of the most famous verses in the Bible’s wisdom books. You might even be able to recite it by memory. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight.” (NRSVUE)
But it’s the next verse we might need to pray on and consider. Verse 6 says, “In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.”
Acknowledge God for WHO HE IS – Creator, Savior, Sustainer – and “He will make straight your paths.” Scripture doesn’t say He’ll get rid of your journey or shorten the road. It doesn’t say you’ll arrive at your destination immediately or without the necessary travel. It says He will straighten the path – that He’ll organize it or order it for its kingdom purpose when we recognize His authority over it and over us. He’s directing us – but the journey is still a part of our story and – if we let it – will be a part of our testimony.
How do we acknowledge Him? Well verse 7 gives us an answer, too. “Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and turn away from evil.”
How do we acknowledge Him? Know that He is God, He is omnipotent, and He is the clearer of paths and the author of life. Know that His wisdom exceeds your wisdom – that spiritual wisdom is of Heaven, not of humankind – and respect that wisdom. Know it & claim it. Live it. Turn toward God’s goodness.
